2003年7月送上火星的探測車「機會號」(Opportunity)，服役即將滿10年，雖然傳出車體老舊，出現問題，但美國太空總署(NASA)表示他們操作「機會號」分析最古老的火星岩Esperance 6發現，岩石中富含黏土礦物成分，類似富含鋁的微晶高嶺石，證明了岩石和水曾交互作用，改變了岩石的化學成分。
 
因此科學家相信，火星岩石群曾有大量的水流動，而且這些岩石是在酸鹼值接近中性的環境下形成，證明流動的水，應該是可以飲用的水。
